Coimbra: the two banks of the Mondego

The tour starts next to the statue of king Dinis, the founding kink of the University of Coimbra. After getting to know the University City, it’s time to head to the Cathedrals of Coimbra: passing through the New Cathedral, through the old Bishop’s Palace, arriving at the Old Cathedral. After descending the Quebra Costas (break backs) and passing through Almedina’s Arch, we reach downtown. We go to the Monastery of Santa Cruz, pantheon of king Afonso Henriques and his son, Sancho I. We cross Commerce Square and arrive at Largo da Portagem (Toll Square).

We cross the Mondego River through Santa Clara bridge and arrive at the bank linked to the stories of the women of Coimbra. Next to the Monastery of Santa Clara-a-Velha lived Holy Queen Isabel and Inês de Castro. Passing by Portugal dos Pequenitos and Saint Francis Convent, and going up the Calçada Santa Isabel, we will arrive at the Monastery of Santa Clara-a-Nova, from where you can enjoy a beautiful view of the city of Coimbra. After returning to the right bank of the Mondego through Pedro and Inês pedestrian bridge, the visit ends at the Green Park of Mondego.
